This place is divine! The food was so so good and it's a sophisticated yet intimate restaurant. My husband insists that the dessert of the hazelnut torte with ice cream and candied honey was the best dessert he's ever had.
I came here for an anniversary dinner this evening and had an amazing time. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very kind. Service here overall was very quick (although we came when it opened at 5pm) and kind. Great service. We ordered the dungeness crab bruschetta, beef empanada, clam chowder, heirloom tomato salad, and beef rib-eye steak. A complimentary mushroom bisque came out first and it was AMAZING. I've always been a fan of mushroom bisques, so it was a happy surprise to start the meal. The dungeness crab bruschetta was probably my most favorite dish from the meal. It was garlicky, but also summery with the yuzu, and the crab was plentiful. The beef empanada was also full of savory beef filling and had a great sauce that complimented it perfectly. We were also made aware that the clam chowder was the most popular item on the WHOLE menu (including steaks) and I can understand why. The clam chowder had whole clams in it, and the bone marrow added so much depth and flavor to the soup. Although it was a bit salty for my taste, I still thought that it was great, especially with the bone marrow. The two entrees--the heirloom tomato salad and beef rib-eye steak--were also good. The beef rib-eye had a lot of tendon, so it was a bit tough to chew, but it was still juicy and tender (once I cut out the tendon) and with the chimichurri, it was phenomenal. I also loved the heirloom tomato salad. It was summery, light, and the peppers were a surprising delight in the dish! Great spot for an anniversary dinner. :)
Probably the best steak I've ever had - and it was a surprise to me that it was skirt steak. We came to Ox on multiple recommendations for a quick trip to Portland, and it was unforgettable. The staff was so attentive and warm, service was excellent. We ordered the dungeness crab bruschetta, clam chowder with smoked bone marrow, skirt steak, ribeye, sautéed mushrooms and spinach and fried green beans and cauliflower. Everything was so flavorful and perfectly seasoned. We almost didn't get the chowder because it was a hot summer day, but we would've regretted it if we didn't-it was so good. The only note is that the outdoor tables did have ants, which got a bit pesky. But needless to say, we'll be back on our next visit to Portland.
Finally made it to Ox and it was everything that I'd heard it to be! I enjoyed a nice spot at the kitchen counter, overlooking the wood-fired grill. I could feel the heat from that fire! They have a cozy indoor space and large outdoor patio. And a private parking lot :) I had the Heirloom Tomato salad, Maple-glazed carrots, and Filet Mignon. Everything was truly amazing, delightful, and perfectly prepared. While there's so much attention and excitement about the beef, they didn't neglect the sides. They were just as creatively designed and prepared and fresh! Service was also amazing. The servers all pitch in as the need and opportunity arises so I had four people taking care of me! Such a spectacular place! I'm looking forward to returning.
Ox exceeded all expectations. Tucked away in an unassuming neighborhood, Ox is an Argentinian twist on the new American style restaurant. I always rate restaurants against what I have come to expect in New York City, and Ox would easily fit in amongst the trendiest hot spots in Manhattan. The only difference being that at Ox I never felt rushed to get to the next course - I had plenty of time to enjoy each dish. The skirt steak was superb but I must admit the flash-fried cauliflower stole the show. I would give Ox my highest recommendation. Great for a date night with an adventurous partner or friends from out of town.
Amazing food! The restaurant also has a good ambiance and the meats are cooked from a wood fire grill! The skirt steak and pork chop was good! Porkchop was very flavorful and well seasoned. Dessert was also really good! Our server was also very nice and provided good recommendations and the amount of things to order. They also change your cutleries for appetizers, mains and desserts. Great service!
I totally understand why they won a James Beard award. My boyfriend and I decided to come here as a belated birthday dinner. We had come a tad early for our reservation, and were asked if we would like to wait at the bar. The bar was tucked in the back outside of the restaurant. It had both a bright and a dark speak easy vibe to it. The bartender was extremely friendly. I had gotten the Pillow Talk and it was a very refreshing drink. I would recommend it. We started dinner off with the oysters and the clam chowder. The clam chowder really stole the show for me. It wasn't thick like the traditional clam chowder that comes to mind. It was very light and comforting. The bone marrow added a layer of richness and smokiness to the broth. I know I'll be thinking about this clam chowder on many winter days. I highly recommend the bone marrow clam chowder. For our main, we had the skirt steak, with a side of chimichurri, and the fried russet potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked, medium rare to the truest of the definition. The meat was very soft and delicious. I wish I could have eaten more of it, but I had filled up on the chowder. The steak paired nicely with the chimichurri, which had a good amount of bite back. I've never had chimichurri with as much tang to it. It caught me by surprise, but it was a pleasant surprise. The steak was still excellent on its own though. We finished off dinner with the raspberry and pineapple sorbet and a moscato. The sorbet was so floral and fragrant. It was very refreshing. The coconut tapioca pudding really mellowed out the sorbet. It was an interesting pairing of such a strong flavor and one that was so calm to the palate. The dulce de leche alfajors reminded me a lot of my favorite cookies. The staff really did their thing. Everyone was so friendly and attentive. They took the time to talk us through what we order when it came out, where our oyster came from, or how to eat the bone marrow clam chowder to make sure that we got the full effect of the marrow melting into the broth. I'm going to give a special shout out to our wonderful server Bryce. He was so kind and seemed like he genuinely was there to brighten our dining experience. He was so delightful and an absolute joy to have.
From the delicious seasonally picked dishes and a nice intimate atmosphere, Ox is a great place to visit. While dining here, I received amazing service throughout my entire visit. Not only was my waiter both extremely friendly and knowledgeable. There were also various other workers who ensured our table was clean by cleaning the surface in between dishes, really going above and beyond to make sure that we had the best experience possible. I was also amazed by how many vegan options there were to choose from. I tried their Bruschetta along with both the Maitake, and roasted zucchini squash which were both so good. Not to mention their vegan dessert which was a house made raspberry-pineapple sorbet with a coconut tapioca pudding was seriously the best sorbet I've ever had!
What a fantastic experience! End to end delicious meal, wonderful service, and a nice cozy vibe that feels both relaxed and elevated at the same time. I'm glad I checked the yelp reviews before going because the raved about items lived up to the hype -- namely, the clam chowder, ribeye, and tres leche cake were all phenomenal. We also got the beef empanada, tomato burrata salad, shrimp, and chocolate olive oil cake, and a bottle of wine which were all excellent. This was our anniversary dinner and it will be a tough one to top. The service was exemplary -- extremely attentive but not smothering. I highly recommend.
